I will say from my experience that i ask for an offer because I myself do not really know what its worth...

I rarely sell stuff, but when I do I usually say Offer. If the buyer comes back with a price I can live with it's theirs I don't haggle, unless your offer is retarded like 1g. I don't have time to scour around and find out what every little thing is worth nor do I care too. It's easier then sitting there for 20 minutes with a made up price and wasting my time not getting offers because it may be too high or whatever. I'm willing to bet that many people who say Offer are in the same boat.

I really hope GW2 has some kind of wow like auction system as well. It makes life much easier cause I can throw up my wares and then get on with playing the game while my goods sell themselves.

I usually only set offer when im selling identified golds where i dont rly bother about the price as long as its higher than what the merchant would give. (Now we're talking half crappy golds, not the rly good ones). In 99% of the cases i agree to the offer that the buyer presents. If i sell a gold weapon for lets say 600g, i have made about twice as much money as i would have if i were to sell it to the merchant. Plus i've prolly made someone else happy by selling them a weapon, or an ungrade that is on that weapon, which they maybe would have had to pay another 2k for elsewhere. So as i see it, even tho i maybe could have gotten a bit more from it, i still havent lost any money on the deal.

He says "offer" because he's hoping you'll quote a number that is greater than what he thinks/knows it's worth.

This is common on extreme-low-end items.

For instance, if a zealous dagger tang sells for 2k on the market, and you say "WTB" for one, a seller will say "i got one, offer" to you. Chances are, you'll highball the offer, and say something like "5k?" Bam. Seller is very pleased. He's got 15x more mods to sell, and he'd really like the buyers to suggest that they all pay double their worth. Small potatoes? Sure. Does it add up? You bet!!

So, "offer" is the best way to make pretend gold in Kamadan, and it won't go away.

Ergh this annoys me so much when people do this. Sometimes I will ask them why they don't give a solid price and they just say they don't know how much the item is worth. Once you offer something and they don't like it they suddenly seem to know how much it is worth...
Most common reason sellers do this is extortion really. Best thing to do when they do this will probably be to annoy them by offering 1g or ignore them.

The reason is that someone will 'offer' up a truly outrageous amount for items some times. They feel that they can get more ectos/gold by letting the person set there own price.

The problem also works in reverse. I recently had two mini MOX for sale. I researched the price they were going for each time. First one I put up, WTS Mini MOX 80e. I ALWAYS indicate the price I want. At the time MOX was going for 70-90e.

I cannot tell you how many people PM'd me with I'll give you 20e, it's not worth that, I'll only give you X, or other such crap. It only took 30 minutes but I got my 80e. The people giving me a hard time are the same ones that sell things for 'offer'. They are power traders and would have done that with my MOX if they could have convinced me to sell it for 20e.

How do I know? I saw the same guy that offered me 20e for my MOX selling one a few days later. He had an easy to remember name. I was on a different character so I offered him 20e for it. Oh Boy was he insulted! He said add at least 80 more ectos to that and he would put me down as the 'C/O'. He also wasn't too pleased when I told him that he had offered ME 20e for mine just a few day earlier.

So in short, anyone saying offer is looking for a rube.

I might try something to just mess with them. Find someone looking for an offer on something like a dagger tang. Then offer them '10' just plane 10 no k behind it. When we go to trade put 10 gold in the window.

Just ignore all the trade that ask for offers. If there isn't a price then it isn't for sale. As for those that say they don't know the price, BS, there are so many sites that will tell you. Let them all rot in spamadan wondering why they can't sell anything.

I don't mind responding to 'offer' since I will lowball, what I hate are the idiots that rage and call you a noob if they don't like it.

It is YOUR fault, you asked me to offer so I gave a safe estimate, if you want a higher price - counter offer, not throw a hissy fit and refuse to sell the item.

I've run into a number of douchebags like this in Kamadan. I tend to keep at least a stack of ecto's whenever possible which isn't a huge amount but chances are I can buy your stupid item if you're willing to not be a twat.

Sorry for the rant but these people really annoy me.

i just got guild wars and have no clue how to play , i bought it years ago actually but just started playing again. anyways, this topic stuck out because of some korean games i played before.

basically someone says "Selling > x item pst offer no noob ". something like that. say you offer like 100g they say "man no, noob offer" or something another. Basically, some people just play the market. alot of peoplei met that do "offer only" are foreign. Im english and have gotten used to it in the korean markets and brazillian markets and unfortunately there is no "buyout" in that style of gameplay.

its a different style of selling that they do where they just keep selling it waiting on the highest offer. people that do this usually, you wont get the item quick if you want it. they will keep selling it for weeks on end sometimes.

personally not a fan of this.

No Alby, I will not stop it.

I always ask for offers and my main reason is to tell whether the person actually WANTS to buy what I'm selling. As I'm sure you know there are tons of people that will try to buy your items for 1/10 the price and resell (powertraders). So, for example if I say "Offer?" and the reply I get is "Noty", "I don't offer", or something like that, I assume they don't really want to buy it. In that case they're just curious of price, trying to powertrade me, or only want it if I'm not smart enough to know it's real value. On the other hand, someone who actually wants to buy what I'm selling will give a fairly reasonable offer.

It really saves a lot of time and stress when you know right away someone doesn't really want to buy your item, you can just walk away. On the other hand, you could give them a price and they start negotiating with you like they want to buy it... and then they end up not wanting to pay anywhere near the actual price.

But there are also many more reasons why the majority of people ask for offers, yes. Trying to get the most money out of the item is a big one.

Yeah, the "offer" sellers are annoying to me as well. Basically if you don't put a price in your initial "WTS" message then i never bother to pm the person. Usually it's just "offer" and if you don't offer what he has in mind, you get flamed.

I don't need the hassle. I'd rather just buy off an auction site like guru or gwauctions.

Its really only for the high-end stuff. Usually its the power traders who do this to make the maximum amount of profit off the items they bought for much lower off of other guild wars players. Dont get me wrong this is not a bad thing at all. It can get you great deals if you know how to play the market. Today I asked for the price on a q9 20/20 water froggy and of course the buyer said, "offer". Now any player who has spent a decent amount of time playing the market knows to offer less of what the item is really worth. I pretty much got a q9 20/20 froggy for 10e with no effort. Yea its water but still a froggy worth 20e

Or when an item is very rare and no one really know the price..
Here the "offer" is the best way to set a price...when the seller like the offer that buyer give, then you can set the price and if you find a similar item you know how much it worth.

when people say offer, i lowball as much as possible. either the people are gonna string you and aren't worth your time, or you'll get a nice deal because they actually don't know the price. I never say offer though unless its high end stuff, as generally i know the prices and if i don't theres the wonderful people in the pc forum :P

I know that they have a price in mind because after they reject my initial offer they'll tell me what they actually want. Do they think that by asking for offers, they'll get a crazy high offer one day?
Sellers say "offer" because they hope you will offer more than they would say they are selling it for. Much like the wheeling and dealing that goes on when you are buying a car. It's all about manuevering for the best price on their behalf. I always offer well below what I know the item is worth. Then they will quickly say it's worth X and that's when the real bartering begins. it's almost like "to catch a thief you have to act like a theif" syndrome.
